English for Speakers of Other Languages

• SQA ESOL qualifications are for learners whose first language is not English. Learners develop their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in the English language, together with their knowledge of language. These qualifications provide opportunities to develop language for everyday use, both in work and study contexts.

• There is no requirement for direct study of English literature for the ESOL qualification.

• Tracking of attainment across the curriculum may provide evidence that a learner whose first language is not English will not achieve a National Qualification in English. It may be that an ESOL qualification is more appropriate and achievable.

• Balwearie offers courses at National 2, National 3, National 4, National 5 and Higher levels.
