Skills Development Scotland (SDS) at Balwearie High School
Supporting Young People to Plan Their Future

 

Skills Development Scotland (SDS) is Scotland’s national careers service. SDS Careers Advisers work in every state secondary school in Scotland, providing impartial career information, advice and guidance to help young people make informed decisions about their future. 

 

How SDS Supports Pupils

Through partnership working with the school, SDS helps pupils to:

  • Explore career interests, strengths and skills.
  • Understand the full range of post-school options, including college, university, apprenticeships, employment and training opportunities.
  • Develop confidence and career management skills.
  • Make informed subject and course choices.

  • Plan successfully for their next steps beyond school. 

Pupils have access to:

  • Individual careers guidance appointments with a professionally qualified Careers Adviser.
  • Group sessions and presentations delivered throughout the school year.
  • Support during key transition points, such as subject choices and leaving school.

  • Additional coaching and guidance for young people who may benefit from more intensive support. 

 

Support for Parents and Carers

Parents and carers play a vital role in helping young people make career decisions. SDS offers support through:

  • Parent and carer information sessions and webinars.
  • Advice from Careers Advisers.
  • A free national helpline: 0800 917 8000.

My World of Work is Scotland’s online careers information and advice service. It provides:
  • Career and course information.
  • Skills and strengths assessments.
  • CV and interview support.

  • Information on apprenticeships, college, university and employment pathways.
