S1 to S3 BGE Mathematics

At Balwearie High School, we have introduced a new approach to teaching mathematics in S1, and we want to explain what we are doing and why.

Our aim is straightforward: we want pupils to understand mathematics, not simply memorise how to get the right answer. There is an important difference between the two. A pupil who has learned a method by rote can often complete a familiar type of question quickly. But as soon as the numbers change, or the question looks unfamiliar, that method can fall apart. A pupil who understands why a method works can adapt it, apply it to new situations, and build on it with confidence as the maths becomes harder.

 

Building that kind of understanding takes time, and it starts with the basics. In the early stages, you may notice your child working with numbers or problems that look simpler than what they were doing before. This is deliberate. We are taking the time now to check that pupils genuinely understand what they are doing and why, rather than assuming it and moving on quickly. This groundwork is what allows them to take on much more demanding mathematics later with real confidence, rather than a set of memorised steps that can let them down under pressure. This does not mean pupils are being held back. Those who grasp ideas quickly are given more challenging problems to stretch their thinking, while the whole class builds the same solid foundation together. It simply means that, especially early on, the pace is set by understanding rather than by how quickly a topic can be ticked off.

 

We know this may look different from the maths you remember from school, or from what an older brother or sister experienced. It is a considered change, not a step backwards, and we are confident it gives pupils a stronger and more lasting grasp of mathematics.
