Advanced Higher Mathematics
Overview: Advanced Higher Mathematics is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of complex mathematical concepts and techniques. This course is ideal for students who are planning to pursue higher education in mathematics, engineering, physics, and other related fields.
The course aims to:
- motivate and challenge candidates by enabling them to select and apply complex mathematical techniques in a variety of mathematical situations.
- extend candidates’ skills in problem solving and logical thinking.
- clarify candidates’ thinking through the process of rigorous proof.
- allow candidates to interpret, communicate, and manage information in mathematical form, skills which are vital to scientific and technological research and development.
- develop confidence in the subject and a positive attitude towards further study in mathematics and the use of mathematics in employment.
- deliver in-depth study of mathematical concepts and the ways in which mathematics describes our world.
- deepen candidates’ skills in using mathematical language and exploring advanced mathematical ideas.
Course Content:
- Calculus: Differentiating complex functions, integrating complex functions, solving first and second order differential equations
- Algebra, proof and number theory: partial fractions, asymptotes, properties of functions, binomial theorem, arithmetic and geometric sequences, formal methods of proof
- Matrices, vectors and complex numbers: systems of equations, matrix operations, vectors, lines in three dimensions, planes, complex number calculations.
Assessment:
- Internal Assessments: Regular class tests, homework and prelim exam
- Final Exam: A comprehensive exam at the end of the course, covering all topics. One non-calculator paper worth 35 marks (1 hour long) and one calculator paper worth 80 marks (2 hrs 30 mins long)

- Added Value Unit: An in-house assessment designed to test whole course content; paper 1 is non calculator and paper 2 is calculator.
